Between the Blue and the Green: Unveiling the Untamed Nature of Cyprus
6. Guardians of the Island: Flora and Fauna
Because Cyprus is an island, it has evolved unique species found nowhere else on Earth. The most famous symbol of Cypriot wildlife is the Cyprus Mouflon (Agrino), a shy wild sheep with large, curved horns that roams the Paphos Forest. The island is also a critical nesting ground for endangered Green and Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta) turtles, particularly on the protected beaches of Lara Bay. Botanists also flock here to see the Cyprus Cyclamen and the rare Cyprus Tulip, which carpet the hillsides in spring.
