Between the Blue and the Green: Unveiling the Untamed Nature of Cyprus
5. The Pink Mirrors: Salt Lakes and Migration
Cyprus sits on a major migration path for birds traveling between Europe, Africa, and Asia, making it a birdwatcher’s haven. The most spectacular phenomenon occurs at the Larnaca and Akrotiri Salt Lakes. In the summer, these are dry, shimmering expanses of cracked salt. However, with the winter rains, they fill with water and attract thousands of Greater Flamingos. The sight of these pink birds reflecting against the calm water, with the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque or the mountains in the background, is one of the island’s most iconic natural images.
